Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Warm-Up & Grip Prep

Mobilising the wrists, shoulders and spine, then waking up the grip and core with light conditioning so your body is ready to take hold of the pole.

10–25 mins

Walks & Spins

Graceful walks around the pole, the first beginner spins and the pose-to-pose struts that turn separate moves into a flowing entrance.

25–40 mins

Climbs & Holds

Learning to climb, sit and hold your weight with control, layering in conditioning so each grip feels steadier and stronger week on week.

40–50 mins

Floorwork & Flow

Tying spins, transitions and floorwork into a short sequence, adding musicality and attitude so it reads as dance rather than a list of tricks.

50–60 mins

Play & Cool Down

Free time to revisit a favourite move, then a calming stretch for the shoulders, wrists, hips and hamstrings to round off the hour.

About Pole Dance Classes in Oxford

Pole dance brings together strength, grace and a real sense of empowerment, blending spins, struts, climbs and floorwork into something that is equal parts workout and performance. Our weekly pole dance classes in Oxford begin right at the beginning, with simple walks and ground-level spins, then build grip, core and upper-body strength gradually until climbs and holds feel within reach. There is no assumed strength or dance background — everything you need is grown in the room, one supportive session at a time.

Oxford has gyms and fitness studios aplenty, but a friendly weekly pole class aimed squarely at adult beginners and improvers has been trickier to find. Ours run from a studio we hire in the heart of Oxford city centre, fitted with proper poles and matting, and easy to reach for dancers from Abingdon, Witney, Bicester and Banbury. The atmosphere is judgement-free and quietly motivating, with the focus kept firmly on your own progress rather than anyone else's.

You will not need strength, flexibility or any previous experience to walk through the door — all of that develops as you go. Wear shorts so your skin can grip the pole, bring a fitted top, and leave the moisturiser and jewellery at home on class day. What You Get From Pole

Strength You Can Feel

Pole builds grip, core and upper-body power without a single dumbbell. Climbs and holds turn your own bodyweight into the workout, and the new strength shows up fast in everyday life.

Built for Beginners

We assume zero strength and zero experience. Every move starts on the ground and grows step by step, so total newcomers progress safely without feeling out of their depth.

Confidence & Empowerment

There is a particular thrill in nailing your first spin or climb. Pole has a way of rewiring how you see yourself, leaving you walking taller well beyond the studio.

A Judgement-Free Room

No mirrors of comparison, no showing off — just an encouraging group cheering each other on. Everyone works at their own pace in a genuinely warm, supportive space.

Your Pole Dance Journey

From your first nervous walk around the pole to climbing with confidence — here is how it tends to unfold.

Week 1–4

First Grip

Getting Started

Walks around the pole, your first ground spins and easy floorwork. Finding out how the pole grips, where to hold and how to carry yourself with a little poise.

What to Bring

Shorts are essential so your legs can grip, plus a fitted top. Skip lotions, oils and jewellery on class day, and bring a small towel if your hands run warm.

Month 2–3

Finding Strength

Developing Technique

More spins, pole sits and your first proper climb, joined up so the moves start to connect rather than sit alone. Grip and core noticeably steadier.

Conditioning Work

Targeted exercises that grow the shoulder, back and core strength pole asks for, with progress you can actually measure from one week to the next.

Month 4–6

Flowing Together

Combining Moves

Linking spins, climbs and floorwork into short routines that flow to the music. Adding struts, lines and styling so your dancing carries real character.

Performance Quality

Dancing with intention rather than just executing tricks — finding expression, attitude and the confidence to perform a sequence start to finish.

Month 6+

Pole Confident

Stronger Skills

Higher climbs, controlled holds and trickier combinations on static and spin pole, with the strength to hold a shape and the confidence to own it.

What Comes Next

Explore exotic or flow pole for a different flavour, work towards a studio showcase, or pair pole with aerial hoop or heels for extra range.

Pole Dance FAQ

The questions newcomers tend to ask us before their first time on the pole.

Can I start pole if I have no strength at all? +

Absolutely — that is exactly who beginner pole is for. The first weeks focus on simple walks around the pole, gentle spins and floorwork that build grip, core and arm strength a little at a time. Nobody expects you to lift your own bodyweight on day one; the strength arrives as a result of turning up, not a requirement for joining.

What kit works best for a pole session? +

Bring shorts and a fitted top. Bare skin on your legs and upper arms is what grips the pole, so shorts matter more than almost anything else. Skip body lotion, fake tan and oils on class day, leave rings and bracelets at home, and have a small towel handy for warm hands.

What is the price of a pole session? +

A single drop-in session is £10 with nothing to sign up to. If you would rather lock in a run, a four-week block is £32, which comes to just £8 per class. We keep things contract-free with no joining fees, so you can pop in whenever the timetable fits around you.

Is pole dance only for women? +

Not in the slightest. Pole is for anyone drawn to a mix of strength, movement and self-expression, and our class welcomes all genders. Plenty of men train pole worldwide, and the spins, climbs and conditioning suit any body that wants to build power and confidence.

Which studio hosts the pole sessions? +

We run sessions from a studio we hire in Oxford city centre, a short walk from Gloucester Green and the train station. The room is fitted with proper poles and floor matting. With more locations planned across the city, feel free to ask whether something nearer to you is in the works.

Will I cover myself in bruises? +

A few marks are normal early on as your skin gets used to pressing against the pole — regulars cheerfully call them pole kisses. They settle down quickly as your body adapts and your technique sharpens, and they are far less dramatic than most newcomers expect.

Is pole dancing a real workout? +

Very much so. An hour of spins, climbs and holds works your back, shoulders, arms and core hard while the floorwork stretches and mobilises the whole body. Most people notice stronger grip and a more defined upper body within a couple of months, all while having too much fun to call it training.

Do I need to be flexible before I begin? +

No prior flexibility is needed. Beginner pole leans on grip and core control far more than splits or backbends. We weave gentle mobility into every warm-up and cool-down, so range improves gradually over time — flexibility is something the classes give you, not something you have to bring.

Is the class beginner-friendly and judgement-free? +

That is the heart of what we do. Sessions are kept supportive and pressure-free, everyone works at their own pace, and there is no showing off or comparing. People arrive nervous and leave grinning, having cheered each other through that first spin or climb in a genuinely welcoming room.

Are private pole lessons available? +

Yes, and they are simple to set up. A solo or small-group booking on request gives you focused attention on a tricky move, a confidence boost before joining a group class, or a route past whatever has you stuck. Contact us and we will fit something around your schedule.
