Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Warm-Up & Awareness

Soft hip circles, rib slides and shoulder rolls wake up the muscles belly dance relies on and settle your posture before any drills begin.

10–25 mins

Isolation Drills

Hip drops and lifts, shimmies and figure-eights worked slowly and cleanly, so each isolation lands in the right muscle before we build speed.

25–40 mins

Arms & Undulations

Snake arms, hand flourishes and full-body undulations join the lower-body work, teaching the upper and lower halves to move independently.

40–50 mins

Rhythm Combination

Linking the moves into a short sequence set to a baladi or saidi rhythm, finding the accents and letting the tabla shape your timing.

50–60 mins

Run-Through & Stretch

Dancing the full combination to music, then a calming stretch through the hips, spine and shoulders to ease everything out.

About Belly Dance Classes in Oxford

Belly dance is one of the world's most expressive movement traditions — an art of fluid isolations drawn from Egypt, the wider Middle East and North Africa. Our weekly belly dance classes in Oxford teach the technique from the ground up, drilling shimmies, hip drops, figure-eights, undulations and snake arms until the upper and lower body learn to move with real independence. Because the style is low-impact, you build genuine strength, posture and grace without any strain on the joints.

A steady weekly belly dance class for adults has long been hard to find in the city. We are opening ours in a studio hired in Oxford city centre, within easy reach of dancers travelling in from Abingdon, Witney, Bicester and Banbury as well as Oxford itself. Each session is led by an instructor who honours the Middle-Eastern rhythms and cultural roots of the dance while keeping the modern fusion spirit that lets belly dance keep growing — and with more venues planned, a class near you may not be far away.

Every age, shape and fitness level belongs here — belly dance celebrates the body exactly as it is, and no previous training is needed. Wear something fitted so the teacher can see your isolations, dance in bare feet or soft socks, and tie on a coin belt if you fancy hearing every shimmy. What You Get From Belly Dance

Strong Core, Easy Joints

Shimmies and undulations fire the deep stabilising muscles around your middle, building real strength while staying low-impact and gentle on knees, hips and ankles.

Posture & Poise

The upright carriage of snake arms and figure-eights trains a taller, steadier frame, and that improved posture quietly follows you out of the studio and into daily life.

Confidence in Your Body

Belly dance honours every shape and size, and dancers regularly tell us the practice leaves them feeling more comfortable, capable and at home in how they move.

Feel the Rhythm

Dancing to the tabla, oud and Middle-Eastern percussion teaches your ear to catch the accents, so you stop counting and start moving with the music instead.

Your Belly Dance Journey

From your first hip drop to dancing a full rhythm with confidence — here is how it unfolds.

Week 1–4

Finding the Isolations

Getting Started

Hip drops, hip lifts, hip circles and rib slides. Learning to move one part of the body while the rest stays calm and still — the single skill that the whole of belly dance is built upon.

What to Bring

Something fitted around the hips so the teacher can read your movement, plus bare feet or soft socks. A coin belt is optional but makes every shimmy easier to feel and hear.

Month 2–3

Growing the Vocabulary

Developing Technique

Figure-eights, undulations and shimmies start to layer together — a shimmy over a hip drop, an undulation through a travelling step — while snake arms bring the upper body into play.

Reading the Rhythm

Beginning to recognise baladi, saidi and drum-solo sections, feeling where the accents fall and matching an isolation to each one.

Month 4–6

Dancing a Sequence

Linking Movements

Full combinations join isolations, arms, travelling steps and level changes into something that flows, with transitions that begin to feel natural rather than counted.

Finding Your Style

Egyptian classical, tribal fusion or modern pop belly dance — you start to sense which flavour suits your body and how you like to express it.

Month 6+

The Expressive Dancer

Improvising to Music

Confident enough to interpret a track on the spot, reading its structure well enough to tell a story with shimmies, undulations and pauses, with optional chances to perform.

What Comes Next

Add a prop such as veil or finger cymbals, explore flamenco or contemporary as a contrast, or bring friends along for a group belly dance session.

Belly Dance FAQ

Everything first-timers usually want to clear up before their opening shimmy.

Can I start belly dance in Oxford with no dance experience? +

Absolutely. Every beginner starts with a single isolation and we layer the rest on slowly. You do not need rhythm, flexibility or any prior training — our Oxford classes are paced for all levels, so you pick up each shimmy and hip drop one clear step at a time.

Is belly dance gentle on the body and joints? +

It is. Belly dance is low-impact with no jumping or pounding, so it is kind to knees, hips and ankles while still working you hard. The movement strengthens your core and posture from the inside, which makes it a comfortable choice at any age or fitness level.

How should I dress for a belly dance class? +

Something fitted around the hips and middle so the teacher can read your isolations — leggings and a stretchy top work well. Bare feet or soft socks are ideal. A coin belt or hip scarf is not required, though it makes every shimmy ring out and is great fun to dance in.

What will belly dance classes in Oxford set me back? +

A single drop-in is £10 with no joining fee and nothing to sign. If you would rather commit, a four-week block is £32, which comes to £8 a class. There are no contracts and no membership — simply come along whenever the timetable works for you.

Where are the belly dance classes held in Oxford? +

Classes are launching at a studio we hire in Oxford city centre — a short walk from Gloucester Green and the Covered Market. We are adding more venues across the city, so get in touch about a session closer to home.

Must I be slim or supple to take up belly dance? +

Not in the slightest. Belly dance is about control and isolation, not splits or a particular figure, and the suppleness you need grows from the practice itself. Every shape, size and age suits this dance — that variety is part of what makes the room feel so welcoming.

Are men welcome in your belly dance classes? +

Yes. Belly dance has deep male roots across the Middle East, and everyone is welcome on our Oxford floor whatever their gender. The isolations, undulations and rhythm work build coordination and core strength that benefit any body.

Which rhythms and sounds will we move to in class? +

A rich blend of Middle-Eastern sound — classical Egyptian orchestras, baladi and saidi rhythms, Turkish tracks and modern fusion. You will hear the tabla, oud and riqq driving the beat, and learning to feel where the accents land changes the way you move to every song.

Will belly dance improve my core and posture? +

Markedly so. Shimmies, hip drops and undulations target the deep stabilising muscles that ordinary workouts often skip, while the upright carriage of snake arms and figure-eights trains a taller, steadier posture you will notice well beyond the studio.

Can I book private belly dance lessons? +

Yes — one-to-one tuition for individuals or small groups can be arranged on request. It suits anyone wanting focused work on technique, a confidence boost or quicker progress. Contact us to talk through your goals and we will find a time that fits.
